The 2024 Youth Career Coach Program is an exciting initiative aimed at identifying, preparing and supporting the future workforce of Newport News. Youth, ages 16-24, are invited to participate in this opportunity where they will be provided with valuable work experiences, career exploration and essential workplace skills. The goal is to equip young individuals for today’s professional landscape.

Responsibilities

As a Youth Career Coach, you will play a pivotal role in the success of our Summer Work-Based Learning. Your duties will include, but are not limited to: 

  • Facilitate day-to-day operations of the program.
  • Guide and support approximately 10 youth participants through virtual sessions.
  • Deliver personalized 1-on-1 career coaching to program participants.
  • Monitor and assess participant performance.
  • Maintain accurate records of youth activities, timesheets, and assist in report preparation.
  • Serve as a liaison between youth, parents, training providers, and staff to address challenges.
  • Build and sustain relationships with youth-serving community agencies and organizations.
  • Conduct individual assessments to determine participants’ skill levels and training needs.
  • Assist in the formulation of individualized career plans for program participants.

Requirements

To excel in this role, you should posses:

  • Proficiency in computer operations, word processing, and database programs.
  • Strong organizational skills to plan and execute tasks within established policies and timelines.
  • Ability to establish positive working relationships and collaborate effectively with others.
  • Familiarity with youth-driven practices and experience in working with youth.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills for correspondence, reports, and presentations.
  • Knowledge of available community resources.
  • Capacity to maintain strict confidentiality of client information records.
  • Ability to prioritize work, handle pressure, and manage emotional stress.
  • Timely report preparation skills.
